Scout Sunday noted in the Weymouth News

The following article will appear in the Weymouth News this week, and is currently available on their website

On Sunday, February 7 Boy Scout Troop 2 and Cub Scout Pack 2 celebrated Scout Sunday at Immaculate Conception Church in East Weymouth. The mass marked both the observance of the 100th anniversary of Boy Scouting in the USA, and the presentation of Cub Scout religious emblems to members of the Cub Scouts.

In total, 16 Pack 2 Cub Scouts received their religious awards, including both the Light of Christ medal, available to Tiger, Bobcat, and Wolf Scouts, and the Parvuli Dei (Children of God) medal which is available to Bear and Webelos Scouts. Cub Scouts are the youngest scouts, between the ages of 6 for Tiger Scouts up to age 10 for Webelos.

To complete the work required for these medals the Cub Scouts had to take part in several weeks of religious education with their parents, and counselors, bringing them closer to the church and helping them contribute to their community. This program is in addition to all of the other activities of both scouting (den meetings, pack meetings) and other interests the boys have (athletics, religious education, family events) as well as their school work.
Recipients of the award receive a medal to wear on their uniform, and can wear the bar from the medal on their Boy Scout uniform when they graduate from Cub Scouting. They also are eligible to display a purple and silver square knot patch on their Boy Scout uniform, and if they receive the Parvuli Dei they can wear an accompanying gold pin with that badge, giving this award a lasting presence in their scouting trail that is second only to the Arrow of Light award received after completing Webelos requirements.

These Cub Scouts dedicated a significant amount of time and energy to achieve these awards, and Troop 2 was privileged to be in attendance when they received their awards.

Cub Scouts receiving the Light of Christ award were Aidan Duffy, Sean Garrity, William Hickey, Liam Keenan, Jeffrey Mullin, Matthew Nelson, J.P. Schiller and Cameron Tait.

Cub Scouts receiving the Parvuli Dei (who previously received the Light of Christ) were Nicholas Atkinson, Thomas Bruynell, Kevin Caldwell, Matthew Freitas, Brendan Jeanjaquet, Austin Lynch, Matthew McCabe and Paul Scannell.
The mass also included members of Boy Scout Troop 2 as altar servers, and adult leaders served on the altar as lectors and Eucharistic ministers. Immaculate Conception Parish, and Reverend William Salmon are thanked for the hospitality and fellowship shared on that day.

Next Sunday we will continue to celebrate Scout Sunday at the First Church of Weymouth, where Nate Murphy will receive the God and Family religious award.

Troop 2 Ski Trip -Weymouth News

Check out this weeks edition of the Weymouth News for a great article detailing the Troop's trip to Shawnee Peak.  Thanks go out to Mr. O'Brien for putting the article together - he should have received the byline.

Troop 2 Ski Trip

Thirty-one boys from Weymouth’s Troop 2 headed north recently for their annual ski trip. The boys, their Scout leaders and a number of chaperoning dads braved temperatures that never went above the low 20s and had a great weekend.

The Troop headed to Shawnee Peak in Bridgton, Maine on Friday; most arrived in the afternoon but all made it by 9:00. Several of the boys skied Friday night under the moonlight, the serious moonlight. Actually it was overcast but Shawnee Peak offers good lighting on the trails.

Sound the alarms! Saturday started off a little earlier than planned as the fire alarm sounded at 6:00 AM. It turns out feeding a crew of 50 makes a little smoke (but no fire). Surprisingly, no one was grumpy. After breakfast and clean up, the boys were back onto the slopes. Six first-time skiers, a few newer skiers and one rickety old timer (yours truly) participated in lessons. Time well spent. The boys enjoyed more skiing Saturday afternoon and evening.

Sunday morning was less dramatic wakeup was but cold (8 below at 5:30 AM according to weather.com). Hot breakfast, clean up and pack up. Some of the boys headed home but a few hardy souls (not to mention legs) tackled the mountain for a few last runs.

Much of Scouting is about acquiring and developing skills. Six first-time skiers made the trip and learned the basics of skiing – getting in and out of equipment, standing and falling (properly), safety, getting on/off lifts and actual skiing. Several other boys earned their Snow Sports Merit Badge – a combination of safety practices including aid for ski-related situations and demonstration of skills in various conditions. Overall, the ski trip is meant as fun and social event for the boys. But I can tell you… I saw a lot of boys and young men doing more than just skiing. Teamwork, responsibility and camaraderie were evident all weekend.

Go www.troop2weymouth.blogspot.com to see pictures (even an x-ray) and to learn more about Weymouth’s Troop 2.

Stay tuned: Upcoming events for include competing in the Klondike Derby. This is an outdoor Iditarod-style event where the boys compete in various activities – ice rescues and various races. And the Troop’s Drum Corp (20 boys) will be part of opening ceremonies in an upcoming Boston Blazers professional lacrosse game.
