Report: Valley Pines Campout - 3/20/2010

This campout was well attended, with over twenty boys making the event including the Senior Scouts AJ, DJ and Nick.  The weather could not have been better, especially after the long bouts of rain we have been getting.  While many of the adults worked on some camp maintenance and repair, the boys busied themselves with various advancement activities or games.  The senior scouts worked on Totin’ Chip with the youngest boys.

After lunch Mr. Kelley rallied the boys for a hike.  We began our hike in Valley Pines and made our way into Wompatuck State Park.  The trail was muddy in spots, but otherwise the conditions were excellent for a hike.  The trip was relatively short – only about 1.5 miles.

For dinner, almost everyone cooked over the fire set up in the cooking pit.  A few boys worked on their patrol cook; offering tacos to anyone that wanted them.

After nightfall the boys sang some song around the fire, did a couple of skits and finished the evening with a few games of manhunt.  The senior scouts enjoyed a cool night under the stars, while the rest of the scouts sacked out in their tents.  The adults kept to the cabin, and the weather was warm enough that we went without a fire in the stove.

We woke early to a very cool morning.  After packing up tents and policing the campground, the boys were treated to hot chocolate and munchins by Mr. Chase.  By 8am everyone had cleared out and the gate was being locked up.

Thanks to all the Dads that helped with the spring cleanup and chaperoned the campout.

11 Troop 2 Scouts attend Town Council Meeting

On Monday, March 15th, eleven scouts from Troop 2 had the privilege to attend the Town Council meeting. These scouts are all working on Citizenship in the Community, which is a merit badge all scouts must earn in order to qualify for the Eagle rank achievement. One of the requirements is to attend a selected town meeting and observe the proceedings. Each scout must choose an issue that was discussed where there was a difference of opinion expressed, and must then explain why they agree with one opinion over another. For most of the scouts this was their first trip to a town council meeting. Some scouts have previously attended as they worked on the Communications merit badge, which is also an Eagle requirement.

Our scouts arrived at 7:30 for the meeting, and observed other scouts from Weymouth troops, including Troop 9 and Troop 19 . Our scouts assembled in two rows, and had the opportunity to meet several members of the town council. We were welcomed in the opening remarks by Vice President Patrick O’Connor, and the scouts were able to watch the meeting unfold.

This meeting included an address by Mayor Kay detailing the state of emergency due to the heavy rainfall, as well as presentation of commendations to Officer Syms and Lieutenant Burke for their recent apprehension of drug dealers. In addition there were several motions reviewed, financial presentations, and discussion of changes to the town charter which were forwarded, and Anne Hebert was elected to the Elder Services Council. All great learning experiences for our scouts.

The meeting concluded on schedule, and our scouts were able to return to the Weymouth Heights Club to review the proceedings, discuss their observations, and complete this requirement.

Thank you to the Town Councilors and Secretary Diane Hachey for this opportunity, and for the education support for our scouts.
