Community Service Opportunity - with cats!

CeCe and Friends, a NO-KILL Animal Shelter is looking for scouts to help socialize the cats who are in their care with people. This group is entirely run by volunteers, and is located in Weymouth.

This is a great opportunity to show Scout Spirit, and provide a community service. You can also work on the Pets merit badge through your efforts with this shelter.

This activity will begin in January, 2011, and will run Sunday's from 10 to 2. Scouts who are interested are encouraged to contact Mr. Clancy, and this activity is open to friends and siblings as well.

First Aid Homework - Due 11/15

Homework assigned 11/8 for follow up 11/15
Our homework for 11/8 will be requirement 2d – “Prepare a first aid kit for your home. Display and discuss its contents with your counselor”

Please prepare and bring this kit to the meeting on 11/15.

For guidance, please refer to the following URL - http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/HealthandSafety/GSS/gss06.aspx

Excerpt:
First-Aid Kits
A first-aid kit well stocked with the basic essentials is indispensable. Choose one sturdy and lightweight, yet large enough to hold the contents so that they are readily visible and so that any one item may be taken out without unpacking the whole kit. A plastic waterproof box, large slide lock freezer bag, or shoe box is a practical kit. Keep a list of contents readily available for easy refilling.

Suggested First-Aid Kit Contents

• Bar of soap
• 2-inch roller bandage
• 1-inch roller bandage
• 1-inch adhesive
• 3-by-3-inch sterile pads
• Triangular bandage
• Assorted gauze pads
• Adhesive strips
• Clinical oral thermometer
• Scissors
• Tweezers
• Sunburn lotion
• Lip salve
• Poison-ivy lotion
• Small flashlight (with extra batteries)
• Absorbent cotton
• Water purification tablets (iodine)
• Safety pins
• Needles
• Paper cups
• Foot powder
• Instant ice packs

Because of the possibility of exposure to communicable diseases, first-aid kits should include latex or vinyl gloves, plastic goggles or other eye protection, and antiseptic to be used when giving first aid to bleeding victims, as protection against possible exposure.

WHC Turkey Dinner

Tomorrow (11/13) is the annual Weymouth Heights Club Turkey Dinner at Valley Pines.  Scouts and their family are invited to join us for a turkey dinner with all the fixings.  This is also an overnight campout for all our scouts.

Families should bring folding chairs and non-alcoholic drinks (we will have water).  Parking is always an issue for this event, so carpooling is encouraged and appreciated.  Families can arrive any time after 11am.  Dinner and the Flag Retirement Ceremony will be "early afternoon" - depending on how the cooking goes.  We will be asking all families to leave before dark, so we don't have to worry about cars and kids in the dark.

Scouts should bring their typical overnight gear.  If we have leftover turkey, we will serve it again for dinner.  Scouts might want to pack a backup dinner, in case we don't have leftovers.  Scouts should try to get to Valley Pines by 9am, to help prepare for the dinner and Flag Retirement Ceremony.  Pickup on Sunday is the typical 8am-9am timeframe - boys should not leave without checking w/ Mr. Kelley first. Scouts that are part of the Flag Retirement Ceremony should bring their uniform for the ceremony.

Happy Birthday James
