On Sunday, February 7 Boy Scout Troop 2 and Cub Scout Pack 2 celebrated Scout Sunday at Immaculate Conception Church in East Weymouth. The mass marked both the observance of the 100th anniversary of Boy Scouting in the USA, and the presentation of Cub Scout religious emblems to members of the Cub Scouts.
In total, 16 Pack 2 Cub Scouts received their religious awards, including both the Light of Christ medal, available to Tiger, Bobcat, and Wolf Scouts, and the Parvuli Dei (Children of God) medal which is available to Bear and Webelos Scouts. Cub Scouts are the youngest scouts, between the ages of 6 for Tiger Scouts up to age 10 for Webelos.
To complete the work required for these medals the Cub Scouts had to take part in several weeks of religious education with their parents, and counselors, bringing them closer to the church and helping them contribute to their community. This program is in addition to all of the other activities of both scouting (den meetings, pack meetings) and other interests the boys have (athletics, religious education, family events) as well as their school work.
Recipients of the award receive a medal to wear on their uniform, and can wear the bar from the medal on their Boy Scout uniform when they graduate from Cub Scouting. They also are eligible to display a purple and silver square knot patch on their Boy Scout uniform, and if they receive the Parvuli Dei they can wear an accompanying gold pin with that badge, giving this award a lasting presence in their scouting trail that is second only to the Arrow of Light award received after completing Webelos requirements.
These Cub Scouts dedicated a significant amount of time and energy to achieve these awards, and Troop 2 was privileged to be in attendance when they received their awards.
Cub Scouts receiving the Light of Christ award were Aidan Duffy, Sean Garrity, William Hickey, Liam Keenan, Jeffrey Mullin, Matthew Nelson, J.P. Schiller and Cameron Tait.
Cub Scouts receiving the Parvuli Dei (who previously received the Light of Christ) were Nicholas Atkinson, Thomas Bruynell, Kevin Caldwell, Matthew Freitas, Brendan Jeanjaquet, Austin Lynch, Matthew McCabe and Paul Scannell.
The mass also included members of Boy Scout Troop 2 as altar servers, and adult leaders served on the altar as lectors and Eucharistic ministers. Immaculate Conception Parish, and Reverend William Salmon are thanked for the hospitality and fellowship shared on that day.
Next Sunday we will continue to celebrate Scout Sunday at the First Church of Weymouth, where Nate Murphy will receive the God and Family religious award.
