Troop 2 Brings Home the Silver - Newspaper Article

Thanks to Shawn Jackson for getting a great article published in last weeks Weymouth News, with a picture of the boys too.

There is a mention of our appearance at the Blazers game, at the end of the article.

Boy Scouts from Weymouth’s Troop 2 took second place in the 2010 Klondike Derby! The Klondike Derby is a skills competition between troops from all over the South Shore. Each team participates in a number of events; the object is to complete the task in the fastest time. The team with the best overall score wins. Scores are based on skill, time, teamwork and spirit. Read on for a recap of the day’s events.

First, let me set the scene… A light snow fell on Camp Squanto, tucked deep in the woods of Miles Standish State Park. Temps hovered in the low 20’s all day making all feel like Klondike Kats. Event stations were manned by timekeeper and judges. Ready, set, go.

Ice Rescue – Save your buddy stuck on thin ice. The team must connect several pieces of rope and secure one end to a tree using different knots. Then throw a line to their stranded mate who must tie a bowline around his waist and be pulled to safety. Josh, Shane, and AJ tied, Josh tossed and Tim quickly secured the line around his waist. The team pulled Tim off the ice, ably saving their comrade and leading to much rejoicing!

Fire Starting – Light the fire, burn through the string. Within moments AJ turned a spark from a flint into a blaze, a few well-placed huffs & puffs and the string was gone. The team had one of the day’s best times on this event and I got to warm my hands.

Blind men’s Shelter – One man injured but able to see, all others blindfolded – build a shelter. The trick in this event is listening and teamwork. Eagle Scout Shane called, the others followed. Take hold of the tarp, few steps forward, a couple of steps right, tarp up and over. Voila, shelter!

Turkey Shoot – Throw the Frisbee through the loop. Okay not exactly Pilgrims and muskets but target shooting nonetheless. Andrew, Tyler, Josh and Shane were right on target as the team marksmen.

Compass – Navigate a course from given headings. Josh volunteered to orienteer through the white and drifted snow.

Lumberjack Team – Cross the ice on four-man snowshoes and cut through the logs. This event is all about teamwork. Mitchell, Taylor, Tyler and Jackson stepped up as they stepped across in a pair of four-man snowshoes. Then Tyler and Jackson made quick work of the log using the ol’ two-man saw.

First Aid – Injury first aid, make a stretcher and carry your man to safety. Shane directed the entire team as they treated for head injuries, constructed a stretcher from sticks and tarp, and they carried their victim away.

Lashing – Tie (lash really) three poles together, reach across the gorge and retrieve the bucket. Rope work and teamwork are the keys for success once again. Pat, Joe, Andrew and Jackson lashed and stretched and reached their goal. The timekeeper indicated it was the best score he’d ever seen in this event!

Lunch – Hot dogs, hot soup (chicken noodle) and hot chocolate prepared by the attending dads. Four star meal, well at least a four snowflake meal.

Yukon Bolt – Final event was a dog-sled race minus the dogs. Tim acted as the passenger while Shane, Tyler, Josh, AJ, Pat, Mitchel, Taylor, Derek, Jackson and Andrew pulled the sled with all their might for two heats before being eliminated.

Awards – The Sabertooths from Troop 2 took second place! Not bad for the Troop’s first year in the event. Special thanks to Roger Phillips for coaching the team!

Beat of their own drums – Two great weekends in a row for the Troop. The prior weekend, our Drum Corps had the honor of performing on the field during opening ceremonies of the Boston Blazers game. The boys later performed during one of the time outs, where they made their appearance on the TD Banknorth Garden’s giant screen. And the crowd went wild! The 20 boys who performed and their families then enjoyed watching Boston’s professional lacrosse team soundly defeat the Philadelphia Wings
