Troop 2 35th Anniversary Photo

This historic photo is from the 35th Anniversary celebration for Troop 2 in 1946.

On the left is Ernest A. Smith, the first scoutmaster of Troop 2.

On his right is George Chalmers, who at that time was the only scout in the Troop whose father was also a scout in Troop 2.

Troop 2 Weymouth was organized by Mr. Smith at the East Weymouth Congregational Church in 1911. Sunday April 16, maybe called the date of organization for Troop 2 Weymouth.

We are the oldest continuously chartered and active troop in Weymouth. The reason we are not "Troop 1" is very interesting, as related below:

At the same time that Mr.Smith applied for commission as Scoutmaster, the minister of the Baptist Church at Weymouth Landing also applied for commission as Scoutmaster.

In the confusion at National Headquarters the numeral "1" was assigned to that organization, and Mr. Smith received the numeral "2".

Troop 1 however, was not organized for scout work until Troop 2 Weymouth had been in existence more than a year.

The first regular Troop 2 Weymouth Boy Scout meeting was held in the East Weymouth Congregational Church on Saturday, April 22, 1911.

Troop 2 is celebrating our 100th anniversary this year. Keep an eye on on our BLOG and webpage for further information.
